A Maltese bishop, Mgr Walter Michael Ebejer OP, has died in Brazil. He was 91.

The Dominican community in Malta said in a statement that Mgr Ebejer, brother of prolific author Francis Ebejer, was bishop of União da Vitória.

He was born in Dingli on 3 August 1929, and joined the Dominican Community before studying philosophy and theology first in Malta and later in England.

He was ordained a priest on 24 January 1954 and went to Brazil on missionary work in 1957. He was nominated bishop in 1976 by Pope Paul VI.
