A Eurostat study found that the Maltese are in second place in terms of daily consumption of soft drinks.

Belgium leads in first place (20% of the population consuming soft drinks at least once a day), with Malta in second place with 12%, followed closely by Germany, Hungary, Poland and Bulgaria.

By contrast, the countries with the lowest percentage was recorded in Estonia (2%), followed by Lithuania, Finland, Latvia and Romania (all around 3%).

This data was collected from a 2019 EU member state study.

The study shows how 9% of people aged 15 and over in the EU drank sugar-sweetened soft drinks daily, while 6% drank such beverages 4-6 times a week and 19% drank these 1-3 times a week.

Malta ranked lowest for the amount of people who drank such beverages once to three times a week, with 12.4% of the population. It also ranked fourth lowest for people who drank such beverages 4-6 times a week.

70.8% of Maltese said they never, or only occasionally, drink soft drinks.

In terms of the EU as a whole, it was recorded that men consumed more soft drinks than women (12% of men vs. 7% of women). In addition, the older the age group, the lower the frequency of consumption of these beverages was found: the highest share was recorded among those aged 15 to 24 (14%), while those aged 65 to 74 and people aged 75 and over had the lowest shares (around 5%).
