Chess – European Union Championships 2007
Current Malta Chess Champion Colin Pace is representing Malta in the 3rd European Union Individual Chess Championship 2007 that is being played in the beautiful province of Aosta in Italy bordered by Switzerland, France and the Piemonte region.

Top seed of the competition is Bulgarian Grandmaster Alexander Delchev (Elo 2600) followed by German Luther Thomas and Serb player Sedlak Nikola. Pace is ranked 46th in a field of over one hundred players.

On his return to Malta Pace will turn his attention to coaching for a short period of time as he will be joining Ray Azzopardi and Duncan Vella to deliver two chess courses namely, an 'Introduction to Chess' for Kids and a course for 'Beginners'. Both courses will be held at the Malta Chess Federation premises in Sliema.

The Introduction to Chess for Kids is aimed for children (boys or girls) under the age of 12. It is intended for those who have no knowledge of the game. At the end of the course, kids will be able to play and complete a game of chess and be able to make use of the standard chess clock.

The Chess for Beginners is targeted for players who already know the basic rules of the game and would like to learn some basic checkmate and other useful techniques.

Both courses will consist of ten sessions of one and a half hours each, held twice weekly. There will be a part dedicated to theory and a practical part where students will practice what they have learnt through playing.

The Introduction to Chess for Kids course will start on the 9th July and will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 6pm to 7.30pm whereas the the Chess for Beginners course will commence on the 11th July and will be held on Wednesdays from 6pm to 7.30pm and Saturdays from 9am till 10.30am.

Applications and payments (Lm 20 to Malta Chess Federation) are open until Friday 22nd June.

To apply send the form(www.chessmalta.com/courseApplicationForm.doc) by post to: Chess Courses, Malta Chess Federation, 87 St. Vincent Street, Sliema SLM 1445. Places are limited and are on a first come first served basis.
