‘Birgu By Candlelight’ tomorrow
Birgu By Candlelight has become a fixed and much awaited annual event in the growing calendar of cultural happenings – last year’s edition of the candle-lit extravaganza was attended by over 20,000 visitors.

This success is expected to be repeated again this year as Vittoriosa residents are gearing up for another magical night with the historical theme of World War II taking centre stage.

Set for tomorrow, from 7pm, Birgu by Candlelight is an event being organised by the Ministry for Tourism and Culture in collaboration with the Vittoriosa local council and supported by the Malta Tourism Authority.

The programme will include historical themes centred round the city’s role during the Second World War, music, theatrical representations and dance during which visitors will be interacting with the events happening all over Vittoriosa. Some of the participating acts in Birgu by Candlelight will include the Island Brass Ensemble from Gozo, a chamber music trio led by Antoine Frendo, illusionist Brian Role playing period street tricks, Jackson’s Pipe band, vocal and instrumental sacred music concerts inside the two main churches, an old motors at wartime display by the Military Vehicle Collectors Club, dance performances by the Donne di Sicilia presented by the Cinema Nuovo Italiano di Ragusa dance group, guided tours such as Birgu Highlights, military fortifications and the popular Ghost Tour.

Other events will include the opening to the public of the Malta at War Museum and customary re-enactments, demonstrations by the Malta Command and Cannon Drill, tours at the Inquisitor’s Palace by Heritage Malta, musical entertainment by the Spiteri Lucas band accompanied by bands and dancers in period costumes, projections and presentations.

The traditional food, candles and street décor will enhance the evening ambience along Vittoriosa’s streets, giving a taste of this maritime city’s feel during World War II.

Special arrangements have been made with the Public Transport Authority for the Birgu By Candlelight event. Buses will be operating as usual to and from Vittoriosa, and an extra trip to all prime routes will be leaving Birgu terminus at 00:30 at a fare of 50c.
