Football – Bank of Valletta third division: Mtarfa no match for much stronger Siggiewi
After just two minutes Mtarfa wasted an easy opportunity through Charles Calleja and at the other end the post denied Siggiewi off an attempt by Adrian Farrugia.

In the 13th minute Siggiewi broke the deadlock through Eman Ciappara and six minutes later the same player was very unlucky with a low shot which bounced off the upright.

Siggiewi continued to push forward and they made it 2-0 in the 34th minute as a Ciappara through-pass was finished off by Mark Camilleri.

Mtarfa’s reply produced a free-kick by Joe Farrugia which was saved by Vella but it was 3-0 for Siggiewi in the 40th minute through Mark Camilleri after his first attempt had hit the post.

Mtarfa suffered a fourth goal in the 51st minute with Jason Camilleri scoring from a direct free-kick and five minutes later Siggiewi made it 5-0 through Eman Ciappara’s second goal.

Mtarfa were nowhere to be seen and on 65 minutes Josef Micallef shot in from close range for Siggiewi’s sixth goal after a header by Mark Camilleri bounced off the crossbar.

Siggiewi made it 7-0 on 74 minutes with Mark Camilleri notching his personal hat-trick and Josef Vassallo added an eight goal on 80 minutes.

In the final seven minutes Siggiewi scored two further goals through Jason Camilleri and Eman Ciappara, the latter notching his hat-trick.

Attard-Zejtun C. 0-0

Attard gained the initiative early and were twice close to taking the lead through Yan Grech and Daniel Agius.

At the other end Zejtun wasted a clear opportunity through Sergio Schembri and then they were denied by Formosa off a volley by Glenn Azzopardi Busuttil.

In the 43rd minute the Zejtun keeper came out of his goal to anticipate the Attard striker Mark Saliba following good wwork by Clive Lanzon.

Attard gained the initiative after the change of ends and after four minutes a Mark saliba crosshot was saved by Fardell.

On 53 minutes Attard’s lanky striker Fabian Cutajar advanced all alone but shot wide and seven minutes later a close-range shot by Chris Micallef was deflected to a corner-kick.

Zejtun replied through a Brian Testaferrata free-kick which was blocked by Attard’s defensive barrier and in the 75th minute Attard were very close to taking the lead as a shot by Josef Axisa was blocked on the goal line by Elton Caruana.

An incident in the 82nd minute led to the sending off of Attard’s striker Fabian Cutajar.

Qrendi-Fgura 2-0

After five minutes Fgura went close through Clayton Garzia and then attempts by Shantlo Felice and Matthew Spiteri finished just wide of the far post.

Fgura continued to push forward and a Clayton Garzia direct free-kick was saved with difficulty by Mascena.

Later on Fgura’s defender had an inswinging corner-kick which was blocked on the goal line by a Qrendi defender.

Qrendi played the better football after the change of ends and they broke the deadlock in the 55th minute as a cross by Jesmond Azzoopardi was headed in by Adrian Muscat.

Qrendi practically made sure of the three points through Jesmond Azzopardi in the 83rd minute.

Section ‘B’

Kalkara-Gzira U 1-2

After just a few seconds Gzira went close through a Neil Zarb Cousin free-kick which just missed the target. In the 19th minute Tano Farrugia wasted a clear opportunity as he shot straight into Barbara’s outstretched hands when all alone in front of goal.

On 24 minutes Gzira opened the score as a low cross by James Tabone was finished off by veteran Aldrin Muscat with the same player hitting just wide two minutes before the end of the first period.

A minute into the second period Gzira wasted a clear goal scoring opportunity through Aldrin Muscat.

Then the Kalkara keeper brought off a difficult save to deny James Tabone.

Kalkara replied through Kevin Tonna who hit just wide and at the other end Gzira went close through Justin Felice whose attempt was saved by Barbara.

In the 58th minute Kalkara drew level as a through-pass by Kevin Tonna was finished off by Nicholas Gatt with Gzira coming back through attempts by Justin Felice and Aldrin Muscat which finished just high over the bar.

In the 72nd minute, Gzira’s striker Hashem Rhababh, who had just substituted Neil Zarb Cousin, was shown two successive yellow cards and was sent off.

Gzira still managed to regain the initiative with Aldrin Muscat scoring the decisive goal in the 83rd minute.

Gudja-Pembroke Ath 0-2

Early on the Gudja keeper blocked off a point-blank shot by Steve Micallef and in the 21st minute Daniel Bugeja crossed from te right flank and Carlo Leonardi headed at goal with Zammit saving with difficulty.

Gudja went close through an Elvin Gauci free-kick and on another occasion the Pembroke keeper Debattista brought off an excellent save to deny Terence Vella.

Gudja increased the pressure and were again close trough Vella and Roderick Debattista with Pembroke being denied by Zammit off an attempt by Liam Camilleri.

Pembroke created the better goal scoring opportunities throughout the second part of the match with Steve Micallef giving them a deserved lead in the 49th minute. through Steve Micallef.

Pembroke continued to push forward and went close through Steve Micallef, Jeffrey Fenech and Liam Camilleri.

In the 65th minute Gudja’s defender Donald Lia was shown the red card for an ugly foul on a Pembroke player.

Then the Gudja goalkeeper brought off two difficult saves to deny Carlo Leonardi and late in the match Jeffrey Fenech hit just wide following good work by Micallef.

Then the post denied Pembroke off a Liam Camilleri crosshot but in the 93rd minute Camilleri rounded Zammit to make it a 2-0 final scoreline for Pembroke.

St Lucia-Kirkop 2-1

After two minutes St Lucia took the lead as a Kurt Grima free-kick was not cleared by the Kirkop defence and Chris Curmi took advantage to shoot in from close-range.

At the other end Kirkop were close through Benoit Buhagiar but they were back on level terms on 14 minutes through Oswald Zammit.

In the 24th minute the Saints’ keeper brought off a fine save off a shot by Bryan Falzon and in the 31st minute the post stopped a shot by Benoit Buhagiar.

In the 34th minute Joe Grima scored with a low shot to put the Saints 2-1 ahead with Kirkop’s reaction producing efforts by Alan Deidun and Bryan Falzon which were saved with difficulty by Franco Scicluna.

On the change of ends Kirkop retained the initiative but the Saints created the best opportunities.

Chris Cutajar went very close in the opening fifteen minutes and later on Ian Cutajar’s strong header was turned over the bar by Mizzi.

Kirkop gradually regained the upper hand in the midfield sector and went close through Benoit Buhagiar and Oswald Zammit but it was the Saints who could have sealed the issue as Ian Cutajar wasted three clear opportunities.
