Football – Quick Keno Div. II/III KO: St Andrew’s beat Pembroke narrowly
Group 1

Mgarr U.-Luqa SA 5-2

Mgarr took the lead after only five minutes through a penalty given foor a handling infringement by Luqa's defender Stefan Saliba and converted by debutant JOSEF MICALLEF (ex-Siggiewi).

In the 28th minute MATTHEW MUSCAT lobbed over Psaila to make it 2-0 with Luqa pulling a goal back five minutes later through MARK CIANTAR's header.

Six minutes before the break Mgarr increased their lead as MATTHEW MUSCAT took advantage from a defensive error by the Luqa keeper. MATTHEW MUSCAT notched his hat-trick on 56 minutes with Luqa reducing the arrears on 81 minutes through a penalty given for a handling infringement by Gordon Said and converted by MARK CIANTAR.

Two minutes from time Mgarr added a fifth goal through substitute BRIAN DEGUARA.

St.Andrews-Pembroke 4-3

Pembroke took the lead after five minutes through a KEVIN VELLA header after a Jeffrey Fenech corner-kick had hit the crossbar.

Three minutes later the Saints drew level through an own-goal by Pembroke's defender Karl Vella off a Neil Chetcuti cross-shot.

The Saints continued to dictate the run of play and were close through Michael Grima and Michael Valenzia but four minutes into the second half they took the lead through EDWARD GRIMA.

On 62 minutes the Saints made it 3-1 through MICHAEL GRIMA with Pembroke reducing the arrears four minutes later through a low shot by KEVIN VELLA.

On 68 minutes MICHAEL GRIMA finished off a personal effort to give the Saints a 4-2 lead but eight minutes from time Pembroke's striker KEVIN VELLA notched his personal hat-trick with a close-range header.

Group 2

Mtarfa-Zebbug R 1-4

Zebbug Rangers notched their second win from two matches after completely dominating their match against Mtarfa.

They took the lead after six minutes through TIMOTHY THOMAS following a personal effort.

Zebbug made it 2-0 on 31 minutes as a shot by Ryan Attard hit the crossbar and from the rebound TIMOTHY THOMAS made no mistake.

Three minutes before the break JAMES GALEA scored a third goal from a cross by Thomas and GALEA was again on hand in the 57th minute as he headed in past Muscat following a Mallia indirect free-kick.

Four minutes later Mtarfa were reduced to ten players when Adam Wingfield was sent off for a second caution but they managed to obtain a consolation goal in the 65th minute through a penalty given for a foul on Mario Stivala and converted by JOHAN BRIFFA.

Qrendi-B'Bugia SP 0-8

B'Bugia St. Peter's dominated completely their opponents and took the lead after ten minutes through RONNIE CELESTE following an indecision by the Qrendi defence.

In the 29th minute JASON CASSAR scored with an excellent volley and two minutes later GILBERT SCERRI added a third goal with a close-range shot.

Six minutes before the break B'Bugia increased further their lead through RONNIE CELESTE following a Baldacchino through-pass.

The second half was a mere formality as B'Bugia sustained their dominance and added four further goals through NOEL TABONE (60th minute), RONNIE CELESTE (72nd minute), CLIVE FORMOSA (81st minute) and GILBERT SCERRI (87th minute) for an 8-0 final scoreline.

Group 3

Balzan Y-Xghajra T 2-0

Balzan assumed the initiative early on as they were close through Cedric Agius whilst on another occasion Clayton Caruana missed a clear opportunity.

Balzan opened the score in the 42nd minute through a well placed shot by AARON AGIUS.

In the 46th minute Balzan had a Christian Abela header cleared off the line by a Xghajra defender whilst in the 77th minute it was Jerryton Agius who hit the post for Balzan.

Balzan assured themselves of the three points in the 80th minute through a long distance shot by BJORN BONDIN.

Two minutes into injury time Daniel Axisa was sent off for Xghajra for making unwarranted some remarks.

Marsa-Attard 2-1

Marsa obtained their second consecutive win but they suffered a goal after only a minute's play as CLIVE LANZON headed in from a cross by Mark Saliba.

Marsa's reaction produced a deserved equaliser in the 7th minute through SHAUN FARRUGIA and even took the lead on 33 minutes through NICHOLAS VASSALLO's cute lob.

Marsa continued to play the better football and were unlucky to hit the post on two occasions Shaun Farrugia and Nicholas Vassallo.

Group 4

Gharghur-St Venera L. 1-3

Gharghur went close early on through a Nicolai Borg Sant header with St Venera replying a few minutes later through a shot by Alan Ellul.

In the 29th minute St Venera took the lead when Martin Briffa passed for ALAN ELLUL to hit home from close range. Gharghur equalised in the 32nd minute through a penalty scored by ANTHONY GERA but St Venera regained the lead in the 62nd minute through IAN FALZON.

St Venera secured their merited win a minute from time with a third goal scored by MARTIN BRIFFA following a personal effort.

Group 4

Zejtun C.-Gozo FC 0-2

The Gozitans recovered from their defeat against Gharghur with a hard-earned win over Zejtun Corinthians.

Zejtun's keeper Ludvic Fardell denied them on a number of occasions but he was beaten on 74 minutes for Gozo's opening goal scored by JOSEF BUTTIGIEG.

Three minutes JOSEPH PORTELLI secured Gozo's win following an error by a Zejtun defender. In injury-time Gozo hit the post through a Brian Meilaq effort.

Group 5

Naxxar vs Zurrieq 2-1

Zurrieq attacked right from the opening minutes and went close through efforts by Clive Shumba and Jeffrey Camilleri which were both saved by David Vella.

Matthew Coliero went close for Naxxar in the 16th minute through a personal initiative but his shot was not on target. Zurrieq scored in the 25th minute through a GODFREY CHETCUTI header.

In the 44th minute Naxxar were close to an equaliser but Joseph Mercieca's shot was well saved by Anthony Camilleri. Naxxar however did equalise on 69 minutes through an ADRIAN FENECH freekick with the same player giving them the lead in the 79th minute for what proved to be the winning goal.

Group 6

Sirens-Melita 1-1

The first half was a balanced affair with Sirens going close early on through Ramon Xuereb but they managed to open the score in the 22nd minute through KENNETH ZAMMIT.

Six minutes later Melita were back on level terms through a beauty of a goal scored by their captain MICHAEL MARTIN and just before the break a strong shot by Luke Micallef was saved by Schembri.

Melita gained the initiative after the break and they were twice denied by Schembri off attempts Kane Micallef and Gregory Degabriele.

Gzira-Fgura U 0-0

The first period was a monotonous affair with Gzira gaining the initiative. The Maroons were close through Nico Corito and Richard Attard with Fgura wasting a clear opportunity trough Kevin Gatt.

Gzira dictated the run of play throughout the second period with the Fgura goalkeeper bringing off difficult saves to deny Thane Micallef and Clyde Grech.

On another occasion Matthew Cocks hit just high over the bar and in added time a James Tabone crosshot was turned onto the post by Bianco.

Group 7

Mellieha-St Lucia 0-0

Mellieha went close early on through efforts from David Fenech and William Borg, but Fulvo Azzopardi neutralised in both occasions.

In the 29th minute a free-kick from Gotthard Conti for Mellieha went just wide and the same player Gotthard Conti missed another good opportunity in the 35th minute.

St Lucia responded after the break with efforts from Micheal Caruana and Joel Grima which were both saved by James Abela.

Mellieha were the better team towards the end of the match as they went close through a David Fenech shot which went just wide and an Alan Delceppo effort which just missed the target.
