Football – Quick Keno Div. II/III KO: Gudja, Balzan, St Venera and Zebbug R. reach the quarter-finals
Group 1

Pembroke Ath- Luqa SA 3-0

Pembroke opened the score after just four minutes through a low shot by ANDREW SCERRI with Luqa responding through dangerous attempts by David Serge and Adrian Psaila.

In the 30th minute Pembroke increased their lead through MALCOLM SAMMUT following a good move by Micallef with Luqa having a Mark said cleared off the goal line.

Then Pembroke hit the post through CARLO LEONARDI but just before the break the same player made it 3-0 for the Athleta.

Pembroke maintained the initiative after the change of ends and went close through attempts by Malcolm Sammut and Steve Micallef which were saved by Psaila. Luqa were denied by Debattista off a crosshot by Christian Caruana.

Mgarr-St.Andrews 3-2

The Saints opened the score after 12 minutes through MICHAEL GRIMA and then they were close through Nicky Vella Petroni whose shot just missed the target.

Mgarr’s reaction produced a header by Clive Bugeja which finished just wide with the Sants replying through dangerous attempts by William Camilleri and Jonathan Briscoe White.

Mgarr had a good comeback during the second-half and they equalised on 64 minutes with JOSEF MICALLEF heading in from a Neil Busuttil corner-kick.

However barely three minutes later the Saints regained the lead as a good move by Michael Calleja allowed EDWARD GRIMA to shoot in past Luca Grech.

Mgarr’s late reaction produced the equalising goal scored by substitute LUKE MUSCAT in the 86th minute and two minutes into injury-time another substitute, DAVID MUSCAT obtained the dramatic winning goal for Mgarr which put them into the Quarter-Finals.

Although Mgarr and Pembroke finished on equal points and with the same goal difference, Mgarr scored one more goal than the Athleta.

Group 2

Qrendi-Mtarfa 1-2

Qrendi opened the score after just nine minutes through a RONALD SPINA header and three minutes later they lost a penalty through Stephen Said who shot high over the bar from the spot.

Mtarfa’s reaction produced various dangerous attempts and were deservedly back on level terms through an excellent volley by JOHANN BRIFFA in the 59th minute.

Mtarfa continued to push forward and were rewarded for their efforts as PAUL AZZOPARDI scored the winning goal in the 70th minute after the Qrendi keeper had saved partially off a Briffa free-kick.

Zebbug-B’Bugia SP 3-1

Zebbug Rangers were completely in command and after going close on various occasions, they took a deserved lead on 21 minutes as TIMOTHY THOMAS headed in from a cross by Donald Gatt.

B’Bugia were denied by Rangers’ keeper Duncan Galea who brought off an excellent save off a shot by Ronnie Celeste with Zebbug hitting the post through a George Saliba effort.

Zebbug increased their lead in the 25th minute through an excellent volley by MARLON VELLA Just before the break B’Bugia were close as a shot by Mark Ellul just missed the target.

After the change of ends play was balanced with Zebbug increasing further their lead in 63rd minute with TIMOTHY THOMAS heading in from a cross by Errol Cachia.

However nine minutes later B’Bugia reduced the arrears through a close-range shot by ERIC SALIBA and despite pushing forward they were well controlled by a solid Rangers’ defence.

This result means that Zebbug have qualified for the quarter-finals.

Group 3

Balzan-Marsa 6-0

Balzan dominated the first period and were twice denied by Marsa’s custodian Roderick Spiteri who brought excellent saves to stop attempts by Aaron Agius and Jerryton Agius.

Then Aaron Agius wasted a clear opportunity and on 39 minutes a point-blank shot by Ivan Zammit was blocked by Spiteri. Then Balzan were unlucky as a strike by Christian Abela hit the post but two minutes before the interval they took a deserved lead through a low shot by CEDRIC SCIBERRAS.

Balzan sustained their dominance after the change of ends with CHRISTIAN ABELA making it 2-0 on 52 minutes.

Then they hit the post through Jerryton Agius but Balzan managed to add a third goal in the 67th minute through a low shot by AARON AGIUS. Substitute ALISTAIR CAMILLERI made it 4-0 on 75 minutes.

Nine minutes from time the Youths sealed the issue through late goals by CHRISTIAN ABELA and ALISTAIR CAMILLERI for a 6-0 final scoreline.

Balzan have qualified for the quarter-finals.

Group 4

Gharghur Zejtun C 1-1

Anthony Gera wasted an early goal scoring opportunity for Gharghur and then they hit the post through an Edmond Lapira volley.

Gharghur broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute as ANTHONY GERA finished off a good move by Southward and later on an edmond Lapira effort was saved by Fardell. Just before the end of the first period Gharghur wasted an easy opportunity through Ryan Debattista.

Gharghur created two clear chances in the opening stages of the second period but gradually Zejtun gained the initiative and desrvedly drew level through a penalty given for a foul on Andy Portelli and converted by VINCE CAMILLERI.

Late in the game Zejtun could have grabbed the winning goal but Andy Portelli shot just wide on two occasions.

Gozo-St.Venera L. 1-1

St. Venera obtained the point they required to qualify for the quarter-finals.

They took an early lead with IAN FALZON shooting in past Xuereb after just seven minutes but the Gozitans equalised on 17 minutes through CHRISTIAN BUGEJA after a shot by John Camilleri had bounced off the bar.

Just before the end of the first-half St. Venera were unlucky as they hit the post through a Mark Grech effort.

During the second half, the Lightnings created the best opportunities and were close through David Calleja and Mark Grech.

The Gozitans gained the intitiative in the closing stages but they were well controlled by a solid St.Venera defence.

Group 6

Sirens-Gzira U 0-3

Gzira United played the better football during the first half and after wasting a clear goal scoring opportunity through Jeremy Gatt Coleiro, they took the lead through JESMOND MICALLEF who took advantage from an error by Sirens’ keeper Romeo Schembri.

In the 35th minute Sirens ended up with ten players when their captain Kristian Galea was sent off for a handling infringement on the goal line.

Gzira were given a penalty but Matthew Cocks’ shot from the spot was well saved by Schembri.

After the resumption Sirens pressed for an equaliser and were denied by Camilleri off a point-blank shot by Adrian Galea but Gzira managed to seal the issue through two late goals scored by JESMOND MICALLEF and substitute RICHARD ATTARD.

Fgura-Melta 0-2

Although attacking for long stretches during the first-half, Melita were rather confusing up front.

They went close through Julian Galea and Gregory Degabriele but they managed to break the deadlock five minutes before the break through KANE MICALLEF following a personal effort.

Melita dominated the second period and were denied by Ranier Farrugia on various occasions.

Fgura were reduced to ten players in the 58th minute when Shantlo Felice was booked for a second time and was sent off. In the 75th minute Melita were given a penalty for a handling infringement by Clint Ellul but Matthew Borg I’s shot from the spot was saved by Farrugia.Six minutes from time Melita sealed the issue through MATTHEW BORG II.

Group 8

Gudja-Lija Ath 2-1

Gudja United managed to win this direct encounter against Lija Athletic and have qualified for the quarter-finals. Lija dictated the run of play during the first period and went lose early on through efforts by Beppe Antignolo and Andre Scicluna.

Then a shot by Ibrahim Tarik just missed the target with Gusja replying through a Duncan Burke free-kick which was saved by Bonnici. Lija broke the deadlock on 29 minutes as GLENN BARRY headed in from a cross by Martin Camilleri.

Five minutes later Gudja were back on level terms through a penalty given for a handling infringement by Andrew Scerri and converted by ELVIN GAUCI.

Although Lija did much of the attacking after the break, it was Gudja who created the best opportunities and they managed to take the lead in the 61st minute through ELTON BUGEJA.

Lija reacted but in counter-attacks, Gudja went close through Roderick Debattista and Dean Agius. A minute from time Lija were given a penalty for a foul on Beppe Antignolo but Ibrahim Tarik shot wide from the spot.
