The Malta Dog Training Society meets every Wednesday at the Ta’ Qali car park near the national park around 7.30pm and usually involves around an hour and a half of training. My aim is to provide owners with knowledge about their dog and how to obediencetrain them. My aim is also to establish a group for competitive obedience with whom we can compete at international level at Crufts UK.
We all do this on a voluntary basis, although there is a small club fee, which is used either for equipment, to organise meetings and seminars for our members and to bring over a foreign expert to deliver a speech.
We are members of the International Canine Federation and The Kennel Club UK and the only dog club in Malta with qualified trainers and judges approved by UK standards. I myself am a trainer and study dog psychology and behaviour.
I was recently recognised by the International Association of Canine Professionals and am currently studying for my KCAI (Kennel Club Accreditated Instructor) qualification from the UK Kennel Club.
Seminar and Dog Show to be held between 7 – 9 November
The Malta Dog Training Society and The Maltese Rottweiler Club are introducing IPO sport and training.
This working dog sport offers an opportunity for dog owners to train their dog and compete with each other for recognition of both the handler’s ability to train and the dog’s ability to perform as required. IPO and Schutzhund are intended to demonstrate the dog’s mental stability, endurance, structural efficiencies, ability to scent, willingness to work, courage, and trainability. Various breeds of dogs are permitted to compete in IPO i.e. German Shepherd dogs, Rottweilers, Giant Schnauzers, Boxers, Doberman Pinschers, Bouviers, Airedales and Belgian Shepherd dogs. This is a great opportunity for all family members to engage in a new sport together with their pet.
Guy Verschatse will be delivering a two day seminar on 7 and 8 November. The first day of the seminar will be theoretical and will be held at the Bella Vista Hotel in Qawra from 7pm onwards. On the following day all those attending the seminar will have the opportunity to bring their dogs at Ta’ Qali, starting at 9.30am in the picnic area, were Mr Verschatse will be conducting the second part of his seminar and practically highlighting different training methodologies.
Finally we will conclude this venture with a special breed conformation show for Rottweilers. Guy Verschatse is more than just a breed judge and expert. He will be judging our Rottweilers while also doing a mental test and general breed test. It’s a unique opportunity for those who own a Rottweiler. This show will be held on Sunday, 9 November starting at 9.30am at the Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School in Naxxar. Booking and registration of Rottweilers for this show will be open at the Canine Society Club in Hamrun from Wednesday 29 till Friday 31 October between 7.30pm and 9.30pm.
The cost of the two day seminar is only €12 per person for both days, while registration for Rottweilers for the breed conformation show is only €20 per dog (if you register more than one dog its €15). For booking or more information one may phone on 9944-2426 or email maltadogtraining@gmail.com.
