North Korea beat the United States 2-1 in extra time to win the FIFA under-17 Women’s World Cup yesterday.

The United States took the lead after just two minutes when a long throw-in bounced awkwardly in front of the Korean goal, struck defender Hong Myong Hui and looped over the goalkeeper’s outstretched arms into the net.

The Americans’ lead endured until the 77th minute when Kim Un Hyang equalised for North Korea and forced the final into extra time.

The first period was scoreless and the Koreans were running into a strong wind in the second when Jang Hyon Sun struck the winner, preserving North Korea’s unbeaten record through six matches at the tournament.

North Korea’s win was its first ever women’s World Cup title at under-17 level and adds to the under-20 title it won two years ago.

Pre-tournament favorite Germany beat England 3-0 in the playoff for third place.

North Korea dominated the match statistically with 31 shots on goal to the Americans’ 16, though they had only 48 percent of possession.

The United States played well as a unit, producing some intricate combinations though the Koreans regularly threatened from set pieces.

American striker Vicki DiMartino, who found the net in all five of her team’s matches leading into the final, was held scoreless Sunday and replaced shortly after the start of the second extra period.

North Korea finished the tournament with 12 goals, conceding five, while the United States scored 13 goals and conceded 10.
