Football – Bank of Valletta Division III: Gudja and Zurrieq win to remain section leaders
Section A

Xghajra T-Ghaxaq 0-0

Xghajra were close early on through attempts by Alex Azzopardi and Chris Zammit which were saved by Jonathan Agius.

Gradually play resulted in the midfield sector with Ghaxaq responding through two dangerous Ludvic Camilleri free-kicks. In the 37th minute the Ghaxaq keeper brought off a fine save off a Jesmond Azzopardi effort and just before the break an angled shot by Alex Azzopardi finished just wide.

Xghajra were the better team after the break with Brian Magro wasting a clear opportunityin the 52nd minute.

Four minutes later Xghajra were denied by Ghaxaq’s goalkeeper Jonathan Agius off a strong shot by Jesmond Azzopardi.

Late in the match Xghajra were again very close through substitute Gordon Borg.

Gudja-Kalkara 3-2

Gudja United gained the initiative during the first-half and took the lead in the 19th minute through RODERICK DEBATTISTA following a good move by Elton Bugeja.

Gudja continued to push forward and were denied by Mansueto off attempts by Elton Bugeja and Roderick Debattista but it was Kalkara who drew level on 32 minutes with KEVIN SCHEMBRI heading in past Mark Farrugia from a Clayton Massa free-kick.

Three minutes later Gudja regained the lead through a free-kick well-taken by KEITH FARRUGIA but in added time Kalkara were back on level terms through KEVIN TONNA who lobbed the ball over the Gudja goalkeeper.

Gudja remained the better team during the second-half and after three minutes Roderick Debattista wasted a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Gudja were again close through Keith Farrugia with Kalkara being unlucky in the 70th minute as they hit the upright through Kevin Tonna.

Then the Kalkara keeper denied Gudja’s substitute Dalzier Zammit but six minutes from time Gudja scored the winning goal when they were given a penalty as Elton Bugeja was fould by Kalkara’s defender Kevin Schembri, the latter being sent off.

Gudja’s captain ELVIN GAUCI duly converted from the spot for a 3-2 final scoreline.

Luqa SA-Mdina K 1-5

Mdina dominated the first-half with the Luqa goalkeeper Paul Psaila bringing off two fine saves to deny Clint Caruana and Matthew Francalanza.

Luqa replied through a Jason Good effort which was deflected to a corner-kick but it was Mdina who continued to dictate the run of play.

The Knights took the lead in the 35th minute through a strong long-range shot by AYRTON BUHAGIAR. Four minutes later Mdina increased their lead as a James Vella free-kick hit the upright and STEVE AZZOPARDI scored from the rebound.

Just before the break Mdina increased further their lead with MATTHEW FRANCALANZA lobbing the ball over Psaila from close-range.

After the change of ends Luqa improved their performance and were unlucky as a Mark Ciantar header hit the post.

It was however Mdina who increased further their lead in the 71st minute through MATTHEW FRANCALANZA following a personal effort.

Six minutes later Luqa reduced the arrears through a penalty given for a handling infringement by Matthew Paris and converted by OWEN PSAILA.

Mdina sealed the issue through a fifth goal scored by AYRTON BUHAGIAR nine minutes from time.

Section B

Attard-St Lucia 0-0

The first period proved to be a very balanced affair with Attard being close after just five minutes through an effort by Christian Cristiano which ended just high over the bar.

The Saints were denied by Tyron Spiteri off a Joseph Gatt free-kick with Attard’s reply producing two dangerous attempts by James Anastasi which just missed the target.

Attard gained the initiative after the change of ends and early on a strong shot by James Anastasi was blocked by a Saints’ defender.

In the 80th minute the Saints were very unlucky when a lob by Baldassare Borg bounced off the crossbar and late in the match an effort by Brian Chetcuti was well saved by Tyrone Spiteri.

Zurrieq-Kirkop 3-1

Zurrieq took the lead after ten minutes through a strong volley by CHRIS FARRUGIA with Kirkop coming back five minutes later through Tyrone Bonnici who shot just high over the bar from the edge of the penalty area.

Gradually Zurrieq gained the initiative and were twice denied by Kirkop’s custodian Stephen Mizzi off attempts by Daniel Zammit and Matthew Genuis.

Kirkop replied through Brian Falzon whose effort was well saved by Azzopardi but a minute before the break Zurrieq increased their lead through an excellent MATTHEW GENUIS free-kick.

After the break Zurrieq controlled their opponents in the midfield sector with play becoming monotonous. Zurrieq wasted a goal scoring opportunity through Godfrey Chetcuti with Kirkop doing the same through Albert Busuttil on 78 minutes.

Nine minutes from time Zurrieq were given a penalty by Kirkop’s keeper Stephen Mizzi on GODFREY CHETCUTI and the latter converted from the spot to make it 3-0.

The Kirkop custodian was shown the red card. Kirkop scored a consolation goal in the 87th minute with ALBERT BUSUTTIL heading in from in from a cross by Brian Falzon.

Gzira-Siggiewi 1-1

The first-half was a balanced affair with Gzira being very unlucky after five minutes when a header by Alessandro Pirrone bounced off the crossbar.

Then Keith Bonello shot just high over the bar with Siggiewi coming back through a Pierre Spiteri free-kick which was well saved by Camilleri.

At the other end Gzira were close through Clyde Grech but it was Siggiewi who broke the deadlock on 36 minutes as PIERRE SPITERI headed in past Camilleri from a cross by Josef Vassallo.

Gzira United dictated the run of play after the change of ends.

In a counter-attack Siggiewi wasted a clear goal scoring opportunity through Pierre Spiteri and ten minutes from time Gzira obtained a deserved equalizer through an excellent CLYDE GRECH direct free-kick.

Late in the match Siggiewi were close through Eman Ciappara.
