Cruise liner goes green – Costa Luminosa
by Elaine Attard

Environmental compliance and green cutting-edge technology is not only becoming part of every day life but it is being extended to holiday goers on cruise liners. The Costa Luminosa is Costa Cruises’ most exclusive and innovative ship, created to exceed the expectations of even the most discerning customers.

Represented locally by SMS travel, those who settle for nothing less than the best and who therefore demand excellent service in an elegant and refined setting will get exactly that on the Costa Luminosa. Cruisers, especially Northern Europeans are evermore becoming environmentally conscious and the Costa Luminosa seeks to exceed their ‘green’ expectations as well.

Apart from being one of the most luxurious cruise liners in the world it also seeks to respect the environment. The Costa Luminosa is the first ship in Italy and one of the first in the world to be equipped for ‘cold ironing’, namely a system whereby vessels are plugged into shore side electrical power, enabling generators to be shut down during stopovers in port. And that’s not all, on board there is 100 per cent waste separation, recycling of aluminum, glass and other waste streams and production of water from desalination plants.

The Costa Luminosa is not just the ship of light and entertainment, but also sport, wellness and superb cuisine. On board guests can go jogging or skating on the roller-skating track. It is invigorating to get some exercise with the sky above and the sea below, or take advantage of the state-of-the-art fitness centre, featuring the highly innovative gym equipment. In fact, the Costa Luminosa is the first cruise ship in the world to have a Kinesis circuit, located inside the gym, with equipment that can be used individually or in groups, specially designed to improve your state of health, fitness and muscle tone.

Conceived by the celebrated architect and interior designer Joseph Farcus, the Costa Luminosa is a trendsetter in contemporary design thanks to her unique inimitable style, iridescent interiors decorated with superior materials like fine marble, timbers and mother of pearl, and the use of state-of-the-art technology providing stunning light and colour effects.

The Costa Luminosa public areas are made of premium materials, including 3,400 square metres of ebony and ivory, 20 different kinds of marble, 3100 metres of innovative LED lights, and 120 murano glass chandeliers. The new diamond of the fleet combines the very best of the innovative Costa product: wellness, entertainment, exclusive itineraries, art, fine food & wine, relaxation, great atmosphere, as well as intimate settings for couples and families.

There are a host of leading-edge innovations on board including a four-dimensional cinema, a golf and grand prix simulator and a Playstation deck.

In keeping with the tradition of the Costa fleet, the Costa Luminosa has a splendid art collection, with 288 original works and over 4700 copies. One of the highlights is “Reclining Woman 2004”, a monumental patinated bronze sculpture by Fernando Botero, commissioned by Costa Cruises, which is the focal point of the spectacular central atrium.

The Costa Luminosa is 92,600 gross tonnage and can carry up to 2826 guests, accommodated in 1130 cabins, including 772 veranda cabins. This makes her the Costa Cruises fleet member with the highest percentage of private balconies, namely 68%, so guests can enjoy the superb views during the flagship’s cruises from the comfort of their own staterooms.

Another ship of the Costa Crociere fleet, the Costa Pacifica will be coming to Malta on its maiden journey next week. Costa Pacifica will start operating Malta to Malta cruises for Maltese cruisers this Summer.
