A new benchmark has been established by two Maltese kayakers – Dorian Vassallo and Albert Gambina – when they paddled their VKV Anita K2 kayak solo (that is, unescorted) across the Malta Channel on 1 September.
The point of departure was Marfa and they reached their destination in Sicily, Punta Secca (also known as Cape Scalambri), after a 14- hour paddle.
This event builds up on the success achieved last June when Dorian and Albert, together with the team composed of Mark Bugeja and Michael Gellel, accomplished a night-time crossing in their doubles kayaks from Pozzallo to the Valletta Waterfront.
The 1 September event was part of their preparation for a longer and more arduous paddle planned for June 2010 – a crossing from Tunisia to Malta via the Pelagic Islands. The principal aim of this challenge will be to raise funds and create awareness for Puttinu Cares, the children cancer support group.
This event, which is a first for local kayaking, would not have been made possible without the continuous support from the sponsors – Sullivan Maritime, Ltd, VKV of Sweden and Medcomms Ltd.
The two kayakers thanked Major Andrew Mallia of the Armed Forces of Malta Rescue Coordination Centre; Harbour Master Capt. David Bugeja, at the Malta Maritime Authority; the MIA Metereological Office; Henry Bason; and their great friend in Sicily, Francesco Petralia.
