A serious flaw
by Franco Farrugia

John Spiteri, and indeed, his Azzjoni Nazzjonali, expect people to take them seriously. But, indeed, how can we? How can we ever take seriously an individual and a group, who continually criticise the European Union, yet are unable to mark out a distinction between it – the EU – and the Council of Europe, under whose aegis the European Court of Human Rights (based in The Hague) exists!

For, the by-now famous ‘Crucifix Decision’ has nothing to do with the Union or with its Courts of Justice, based in Luxembourg.

But John Spiteri, writing on behalf of Azzjoni Nazzjonali, lambasts the EU for this decision. Certainly, he allows himself to be misguided, due to his blind fury against the Union.

Not only that, but the Union, in its statutes, ensures that it does not in any way interfere with such things within individual States.

Now, this proves, therefore, that either John Spiteri and AN are seriously misguided or else, they are out to misguide the public. They appear to be ill-versed and poor in their knowledge of EU affairs.

It further highlights that people who try to make their way up the list of so-called ‘people who matter’ simply do not bother to check facts and figures before putting pen to paper.

But, and this is a question to be asked, is it going to show also that they are not gentlemen enough as to write back and retract from what they said? I am on tenterhooks!
