In a sequel to the airport departure tax investigation by the European Commission, the Commission has decided to investigate the legality of the Maritime departure tax imposed on people departing by sea from Malta.
Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika spokesperson on EU and international affairs, said: “Alternattiva Demokratika brought up the issue with the European Commission on discrimination by the Maltese authorities against citizens departing from Malta by sea. Following other complaints by private citizens to the European Parliament Petitions’ committee, the Commission has let it be known that it intends to contact the Maltese authorities and investigate the departure tax levied on passengers using maritime transport.”
