The German Embassy, courtesy of the Metropolitan Cathedral Chapter, presents an Organ Recital by John Aquilina, Organist of Mdina Cathedral, tomorrow at 7.30pm, at the Metropolitan Cathedral, Mdina. The concert, under the patronage of Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany and Mrs Bernd Braun, is part of the Embassy’s celebrations on the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
John Aquilina will perform major organ works by German composers including the Toccata and Fugue in F, BWV 540 by Johann Sebastian BACH; Organ Concerto in G minor, Op. 4 No. 3 by Georg Friedrich Handel; the Sixth Sonata in D minor, Op. 65 No. 6 by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy; Toccata and Benedictus, nos. 5 and 9 from Op. 59 respectively by Max Reger.
John Aquilina is one of Malta’s generation of young organists. A self-taught musician, John was the organist at both St Nicholas’ Church, Siggiewi and at St Andrew’s Scots Church, Valletta between 1988 and 2001. Since June 2001, he has been appointed the official Metropolitan Cathedral Organist at Mdina Cathedral, where he performs regularly on Sundays and feasts and directs the Metropolitan Cathedral Choir.
The concert will last approximately one hour and entrance is free of charge.
