Football – Bank of Valletta first division: Ten-man Balzan register second win
by CHRIS CASSAR

Balzan Youths joined Mosta and Vittoriosa Stars on top of the table with maximum points from two matches when they beat Melita by the odd goal in three.

Balzan had to play the last thirty minutes of the game with a man less when one of their best players Aaron Agius was sent off. But melita failed to capitalize as Balzan obtained a deserved victory.

Balzan had a brilliant start scoring the goals that mattered in the opening minutes. Melita only cam to life in the opening part of the second half when they reduced the arrears and gave the impression they could even save the match. But it was not to be as Balzan defended well with veterans Zammit and Carabott easily rebutting Melita’s feeble attacks.

Balzan had an impressive start scoring two goals in the first seven minutes of the match. After only 90 seconds, Aaron Agius headed towards Simon Shead who fired home from the edge of the edge of the area, to score his third goal of the season.

Four minutes later Balzan doubled the score, Anizoba made the run on the right flank and crossed towards Aaron Agius, who dribbled past a defender before firing in the roof of the net.

Three minutes later Balzan were very unlucky not to score the third goal when Forace passed towards Anizoba who fired against the crossbar, and from the rebound Aaron Agius’ shot slightly missed the base of the upright.

After this fury from Balzan, Melita tried to crawl back in the game, and although they had some good moments they rarely tested the Balzan goalkeeper Tabone. Melita’s best chance came near the end of the first half when Kane Micallef was left completely unmarked, but his header was completely off mark.

The second half started with Melita on the attack and after going near through Nigel Rizzo, they reduced the arrears on 53 minutes. Luke Fenech made his way on the left before crossing towards Luke Micallef who shot low into the net.

Balzan suffered a blow on the hour when one of their best players Aaron Agius was sent off after receiving his second booking.

On 68 minutes Simon Shead tried his luck from the edge of the area but his shot sailed over the bar. Melita pushed all their men forward in the dying minutes in an attempt to save the match, but they never really worried the Balzan goalkeeper.
