Waste Management in Malta

Malta Independent Friday, 29 April 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Have you ever thought twice before throwing away your occasional can of beer – or chocolate wrapper – or a torn piece of paper?

This is what a group of students from Saint Aloysius’ College Sixth Form – under the guidance of Mr Servolo Delicata – have been doing in the past few months, that is to force fellow students to think twice when discarding of waste.

This activity is being organised voluntarily by those pupils who have chosen the science course. As a first step towards a solution to this waste management problem, these students have installed a new system of waste baskets.

This includes baskets for white paper, compressed plastic bottles, metal cans and other waste. This system has now been adopted in each and every class (18 classes in all) and other tutorial rooms, and in the school canteen. In order to increase awareness throughout the whole school a small group within this movement has printed a number of notices informing the rest of college about recycling, reusing and reducing.

Another aim of this activity is to increase the public awareness about this delicate subject which must be tackled immediately in the eve of the sustainable development era. This is being done by means of advertising this method of waste management and by writing short notices or letters.

It is our aim to instil a mentality of first reducing, reusing, then recycling waste. If waste is still produced, it must be taken care of in a serious and intelligent manner that will not disrupt the fine balance in our world.

After all, we students are tomorrow’s adults. Therefore the reaction to respect the current and future world must come directly from us ... for we will not get another one.
