President Edward Fenech Adami yesterday concluded his two-day official visit to the Gozitan village of Xaghra during which he attended various activities and met a large number of residents and local personalities.
The president, who was accompanied by Mrs Fenech Adami, said the locality was home to a number of historical sites dating back thousands of years, but it was also home to a community of people who, together with the local council and other voluntary organisations, did its utmost to keep the town’s identity and characteristics alive.
He said he very much enjoyed the experience and could see for himself the talent that such a small village had to offer.
President Fenech Adami thanked mayor Joe Spiteri and the councillors for extending the invitation, and he praised their efforts to work hand in hand with voluntary organisations.
During the visit, the president and Mrs Fenech Adami attended Mass with the community and they spoke to residents on the church’s parvis. The president also visited the town’s youth centre, the Kola Windmill and the “Victory” Band Club.
The president and his wife met Pawla Grech and Vicky Saliba, well-known in Xaghra for their qassatat and honey rings (qaghaq tal-ghasel), and Maria Assunta Bajjada, who specialises in the production of orange water (ilma zahar) and aromatic syrup (gulepp).
