The barge from atop which fireworks exploded unexpectedly last Sunday, and described to have sustained damages that were "not extensive", sunk off Cavallieri point overnight between Monday and yesterday.
Fireworks, which were to be let off in celebration of the San Girgor feast, exploded, luckily without causing serious injury to anyone. The barge was to be inspected in view of a magisterial inquiry following last Sunday's incident.
Apparently nothing was done to prevent the barge from sinking and once it is sunk it would prove difficult to retrieve. The sunken barge could pose a threat to boats that are unaware of the wreck’s presence on Balluta bay’s shallow seabed.
Also, the debris from the fireworks has not yet been removed from the site. The barge sustained some damage in the blast, but the damage was "not extensive", said the police... yet, the boat has since sunk.
