Tracking The Euro

Malta Independent Sunday, 21 February 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

Malta will be the venue for the second Winter Meeting of the Association of EuroBillTrackers, which is to be held on 6 and 7 March. Approximately 40 members from different European countries will be meeting in Malta and will be visiting various places of interest in Malta and Gozo, while pursuing their hobby to follow the tracks of their euro notes.

The Association of EuroBillTrackers manages a project, where through the web site www.EuroBillTracker.com, members insert the serial numbers of their euro notes into an online database, which presently has over 74 million notes. If the note has been inserted previously by any of the members, they would be able to determine how far the note has travelled in how many days. This is further illustrated by a map, showing the distance travelled. The database grows by approximately 45,000 notes a day, out of which, an average of 300 will be hits, that is, notes inserted for the second time. Malta has so far participated with 325,000 notes and 500 hits. The Association organises two meetings a year, with Firenze hosting the summer meeting in July. This event is partly sponsored by the Malta Tourism Authority.
