PM discusses energy, investment and political relations with Azeri President Ilham Aliyev

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat this morning discussed diplomatic, political and economic relations between Malta and Azerbaijan during a meeting with Azeri President Ilham Aliyev.

The two leaders discussed the investment opportunities that exist in both countries, particularly in the commerce, energy, transport and tourism sectors. They also discussed cooperation in the Mediterranean.

Relations with Azerbaijan have become more important after the EU started regarding the country as a strategic partner on the energy sector.

Dr Muscat said Malta aims to open up more opportunities in the Mediterranean because it can serve as a bridge between Africa and Europe. Malta also supports wider cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan.

The Azeri President said all political relations should lead to practical results. Azerbaijan, he said, looks forward to strengthen its ties with the EU by means of a strategic agreement that benefits both countries. Mr Aliyev said he had others meetings with the political leaders of the UK, Italy, Greece and France an said a sincere agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan is changing Europe's energy map. Azerbaijan has cooperation and partnership agreements with eight other EU countries.

Dr Muscat was accompanied by Health and Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi and OPM Chief of Staff Keith Schembri.
