Tuesday, 23 June 2015, 13:35 Last update: about 10 years ago

One migrant was killed and another seriously injured after unidentified persons opened fire on their rubber dinghy (not pictured) while travelling in Libyan waters, according to reports.

The 292 migrants on board were rescued and taken to Pozzallo in Sicily this morning.

The injured migrant, who was hit in the calf, was airlifted to a hospital in Lampedusa last night and was later transferred to Italy. The dead body was still on the boat when it arrived in Sicily.

The injured man said another migrant was killed by shots coming from a Libyan patrol boat. He alleged that the Libyan sailors intended to rob the migrants of their possessions.
