The National Executive of the Labour Party today approved unanimously the proposal made by leader Joseph Muscat that the election for deputy leader for party affairs is open also to Members of Parliament.

Until today, no MP could aim for the post, but on Sunday Prime Minister Muscat said he would be proposing a change. The current incumbent, Toni Abela, has been nominated to be Malta’s representative in the European Court of Auditors.

The proposal will be submitted before the general conference to be convened on Friday. It will propose that nominations open on Saturday and close on Tuesday 9 February.

The election for the new party deputy leader will be held on 25 February. If need be, another election will be held a day later.
