A 50-year-old cyclist died this afternoon after he was hit by a car in Mosta, the police said.

The cyclist, born in Australia and resident in Malta, was riding along San Pawl tal-Qlejgha Street when he was hit by a Toyota Vitz driven by a 29-year-old of Zebbug at 2.45pm.

An ambulance was called on site but the man was certified dead by a doctor who was passing by and stopped to give first assistance.

A magisterial inquiry is under way.

The police are investigating.
