Alfred Mifsud files libel suit against Daphne Caruana Galizia

Thursday, 16 June 2016, 13:17 Last update: about 9 years ago

Alfred Mifsud, who is set to take over as government general of the Central Bank of Malta, has filed a libel suit against Daphne Caruana Galizia on posts uploaded on her blog.

In a statement to the media, Mr Mifsud said he “most categorically (denied) allegations of corruption and money laundering levelled against me in a blog of a popular journalist.

“After I explained to the said blog that their sources are untrustworthy and motivated by revenge and hate from a failed personal relationship (after refusing unreasonable demands for financial settlement) I was left with no option but to file libel on Tuesday 14th June, 2016.  Obviously once legal action started,  further comments will be reserved for the courtroom.

“With 47 years uninterrupted experience in financial services without ever being accused of impropriety, I cannot be expected to prove my innocence rather than the accusers proving their allegations.”

The libel suit was filed last Tuesday.
