Monday, 27 February 2017, 17:09 Last update: about 8 years ago

The Ministry for the Economy, Investment and Small Business has finally announced Sai Mizzi's replacement as Malta Enterprise Representative in Shanghai.

A government statement read that ms Jennifer Shen May is by nationality Chinese, and is a qualified accountant. "She has been working in Malta for more than 20 years, and has knowledge of business dynamics in Malta".

"She speaks English, Mandarin, and Cantonese, fluently. Her main responsibility will be to target and attract potential foreign investment from China."

Malta Enterprise thanked Ms Mizzi Liang for her work. The press release did not contain any further information, or a CV, and did not contain a photograph.

It was recently revealed by the Malta Independent that Mrs Mizzi's replacement's contract will be for a period of three years and will have a financial package "more or less on the same lines as that of Ms Mizzi".

Mrs Mizzi Liang received, on average, €13,000 per month, one of the most discussed controversies over the past years.

Her original contract, which had expired on 26 August 2016, was tabled by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat in Parliament on 14 July 2014 and was based on those of former ambassadors Joe Cassar and Karl Xuereb. This indicated that she had been given an ambassador's salary, a diplomatic passport and diplomatic duties, plus payments that went beyond the basic salary.

On 25 February 2016, Mrs Mizzi Liang's husband, Minister Konrad Mizzi, told the press that his wife intended to relinquish her role.

Mrs Mizzi Liang was kept in her role for a further six months after it expired until they found a replacement.
