Simon Schembri, the traffic policeman who was seriously injured when an unlicensed teenager hit him with a car and dragged him for several metres, has been discharged from hospital.
The incident occurred on 15 May in the road leading from Qormi to Luqa. The young man had been stopped by the officer to check his documentation, but the driver drove off, hitting the officer.
The driver, aged 17, kept on driving away from the scene but was apprehended by police a few minutes later.
Schembri was for a time in critical condition, having suffered a collapsed lung and fractures to his pelvis and ribs. Schembri's right arm had to be amputated below the elbow as a result of the injuries sustained.
It was announced in May that government will be paying for all medical expenses that he needs for his recovery, including treatment abroad.
The 17-year-old, Liam Debono, has since been charged with attempted murder and a magistrate hearing the compilation of evidence has ruled that the young man will have to face a trial by jury.
Today Schembri was discharged from hospital, and was met by a row of police officers standing beside their motorbikes, appluading him as he exited Mater Dei Hospital along with his family.
