Three Maltese men were arrested on Thursday after a police inspection on a boat found 870,000 contraband cigarettes.

The men are between 24 and 29 years old and are from Marsa and Hamrun.  Their boat was stopped by the police force’s drug squad, who were assisted by the army’s Special Operations Unit, early on Thursday morning near the Fekruna area in Xemxija.

Investigations into the case are ongoing, and a police statement did not exclude that the three men would be charged in the coming hours.

Last week, customs seized four containers full of contraband cigarettes that were on their way to Libya through the Malta Freeport. The containers held a total of 37 million cigarettes and were shipped from Cambodia.
