Gozo ferry services are facing disruptions this morning as the UHM ordered a strike, Gozo Channel chairman Joe Cordina said.
Writing on Facebook, Cordina said the UHM had ordered that some contractual workers that give a service to the company to go on strike on Monday.
The notice of industrial action was given on Sunday evening, Cordina wrote.
He interpreted the move as a way to disrupt services and cause an inconvenience to Gozitan workers who have a job in Malta.
Contacted by The Malta Independent, Ramon Francalanza, the manager of UHM's Employment Relations, Manufacturing and Commerce Section, said that the union had issued directives aimed towards setting a dispute with Gozo Channel which has been ongoing since August.
The director of Executive Security Services Limited (ESS) has missed numerous meetings with UHM, he said. The meetings were meant to tackle the wage gap between those employed directly by Gozo Channel and those employed by ESS for doing the same job.
Francalanza said he hoped that the directives will push forward the necessary action for matters to be concluded in the shortest time possible.
