Followers of slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia last night sprayed messages on the hoarding surrounding the Great Siege monument, a national tribute to the fallen of the battle against the Ottoman Empire in 1565.

The Great Siege monument has been taken over as a makeshift memorial to Caruana Galizia after she was killed on 16 October 2017. It has become the subject of a court case which is still to be decided.

After Victory Day national celebrations on 8 September, the Ministry of Culture said that restoration work is needed to repair damage that was caused to the monument. The second phase of the restoration work will be concluded by mid-December.

Last night, unknown activists sprayed messages on the hoarding surrounding the monument, which was put up to protect it.
