Lawyers for man accused of killing Caruana Galizia cede case on FBI testimony

Lawyers for Alfred Degiorgio have formally ceded the case they had filed asking for FBI investigators not to testify in the compilation of evidence relating to the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Before Madame Justice Lorraine Schembri Orland this morning, lawyer William Cuschieri presented a note, ceding the case.

Lawyers Victoria Buttigieg and Maurizio Cordina from the office of the Attorney General asked that the data presented in court by mobile phone providers were to remain sealed and in the custody of the court, accessible only to the parties’ lawyers and the court authorities.

Despite attempts by the defence to prevent them from testifying, FBI agents had been allowed to give evidence last May, the court dismissing requests to hold them back from testifying as an interim measure until this case was finally decided.

The reason for the case now no longer subsisting, Cuschieri formally ceded it today.

In view of the note, the judge abstained from taking further cognizance of the case.
