A 63-year-old man who was seriously injured when he was hit by a car in Ghaxaq last Friday passed away this morning, the police said in a statement.

The accident happened at 6am on Friday in Dawret Hal Ghaxaq when the man, who resides in Marsascala, was hit by a Ford Transit driven by a 64-year-old man who resides in Fgura.

An ambulance was called on site and took the man to Mater Dei Hospital where he was certified as suffering from serious injuries.  The man passed away from his injuries on Sunday morning.

The death of the man represents Malta's first traffic fatality of the New Year. 

A Magisterial Inquiry has been appointed into the case while police investigations are still ongoing.
