Former Gozo Minister speaks for the first time after assault accusations

Sunday, 3 February 2019, 08:00 Last update: about 6 years ago

Former Gozo Minister Anton Refalo used Facebook to react, for the first time, after accusations were levelled against him of assaulting his son in a domestic incident.

Refalo is set to be charged, but had until now refrained from saying anything. Refalo allegedly assaulted his son after being informed by the father of his son’s ex-girlfriend over images that Refalo's son was sending via WhatsApp.

Taking to Facebook, and without directly referring or commenting about the incident, Refalo says that “a better society can only be achieved if we orientate after our inner conviction no matter how the outer world changes.

This is Refalo’s post:

“For almost as long as I can remember, I have been busy working to improve the conditions for Gozo, to keep the beauty of this island and to improve the conditions for the population.

I have been met with great trust both as a lawyer and a politician, being elected on the First Count in every election since 1987.

In the aftermath of this week’s news, I have received a lot of messages, response and solidarity which I am thankful for.

I ask you to understand that I can’t and won’t comment upon them.

We live in a rapidly changing society, partly facing a new reality brought by through globalisation and internet, and as good as development can be, it also brings challenges to us when it comes to finding a balance between progress and our traditional values which make Gozo and Malta so unique.

We all try to do the best for us, our neighbourhood, society, our families and especially our children.

But even if we try to adjust to the world of today, there are certain values that in my opinion are of ever-lasting kind, such as kindness, loyalty, tolerance and respect.

A better society can only be achieved if we orientate after our inner conviction no matter how the outer world changes.”
