Robert Micallef has submitted his formal nomination as a Labour candidate for the European Parliament elections to be held on 25 May. The nomination of the former Maltese EU Presidency negotiator received the support of Professor Oliver Friggieri who wrote a letter of endorsement to recommend Micallef’s election bid.

In a statement, Robert Micallef said it was an honour to receive the support of Professor Friggieri, a personality who symbolised unity in the country and who has contributed immensely to Malta’s national identity and its articulation overseas. Micallef stated that he intended to take inspiration from Friggieri and, if elected, would work hard to ensure that Malta’s reputation was respected and safeguarded across Europe.

Robert Micallef stated that, if given a vote of confidence by the electorate in May, he would fulfil his duties as a Member of the European Parliament with dignity and would always promote the interests of all Maltese and Gozitans.

“I intend to use my professional experience in Brussels to contribute towards achieving the objectives that best correspond to the priorities of Malta and Gozo. My approach is that the European Parliament should not be a battleground for partisan politics but a platform to create social and economic opportunities for everyone”, stated Robert Micallef

Robert Micallef has extensive working experience with the main EU institutions over several years. He was employed as an economist with the European Commission during Malta-EU accession negotiations and was later responsible for Eurobarometer surveys. He worked as an adviser in the European Parliament and, in recent years, served as a Maltese diplomat in Brussels.

During the Maltese Presidency of the European Union, Robert Micallef chaired Council formations and led negotiations with the European Parliament. Robert Micallef is a founder of the Labour Youth Forum and a former Secretary General of the European Socialist Youth. He studied politics and economics at the University of Oxford followed by graduate studies in Boston, Parma and Grenoble.
