AAA receives over 400 phone calls a month for abandoned dogs

The Association for Abandoned Animals currently has around 80 dogs which volunteers feed, clean, walk, take to vet check-ups and care for every day.

Rosalind Agius, who runs the sanctuary, said that AAA receives over 400 phone calls a month regarding abandoned dogs. “Dogs are still being abandoned and if we do manage to home at least 40 dogs a month our numbers will increase,” she says, adding that the organization has recently rescued a large number of elderly dogs.

Recently, AAA made a public appeal on Facebook asking for donations for canned dog food. “As a charity, we are always in need of help from the public,” said Rosalind. She explained that whilst the situation is overwhelming, the association does its best to cover the needs for these dogs, which include feeding them and settling bills for medical care as well.

“We need donations, more food and volunteers who can help with taking care of the dogs or are skilled and can help with maintenance work.” She also mentioned that there are many other ways in which people can help the AAA, such as donating old bedding, detergents and vouchers from veterinary pharmacies.

She said that, whilst they have moved into the new facility in Birzebbugia, there is still maintenance work being done. “We have paid over €2,000 on water and electricity works, and hopefully we will have the entire place with running water and electricity, so we can have a proper open day for our sponsors and people who have helped us with donations.” She said that regardless of these obstacles, the AAA is always open for volunteering and adoption.

The AAA Sanctuary can be found on Hal Far Road, Birzebbugia and all dogs are up for adoption. Their contact number is 79730921.
