Opposition will back rent lease law only if it is amended, properly scrutinized

The Opposition said it will vote in favour of the Rent Leases Bill as long as amendments are made and the law is properly scrutinized during the summer months.

The new law, which the government says will give more rights to both landlords and tenants, was approved at second reading stage on Wednesday and has now moved to committee stage.

In a statement, PN spokesman on housing Ivan Bartolo reiterated the PN’s position that the Bill does not fix the situation “created” by the government”

The current situation in the rental market is a social problem, especially when considering the government lack of long-term planning. The government is now trying to lump its mistakes onto the private sector, Bartolo said.

The PN, he said, will embark on an internal reform so as to come up with proposals on issues that directly affect people, such as the law on the rental market.
