Commission portfolio: Malta’s standing in EU at low ebb – PD

Partit Demokratiku today noted that the European Commission portfolio given to Malta, that of equality, does not give much merit to Malta, as it tackles a very small remit of what was once a Social Policy portfolio, Partit Demokratiku said in a statement today.

It was referring to the equality portfolio given to Helena Dalli as Malta’s representative on the European Commission.

In political terms, this manifests a decline in Malta’s standing. It is a portfolio that does not help Malta to directly influence immigration, gaming, economy, finance, environment, tax, fisheries, trade or financial services. These are very important sectors for Malta. It is the weakest portfolio ever picked for Malta, leader Godfrey Farrugia said.

Earlier on we had our Prime Minister failing to get an EU post, and now we are given a Commissioner’s portfolio that manifests lack of prestige to our nation, PD added.

Malta has squandered of all its political capital as Dr Muscat’s government has mishandled scandals that has shamed or hurt Malta’s reputation and standing. This is indicative that Dr Muscat’s government does not command due esteem within EU institutions, PD said.
