88 people have been imprisoned for theft, 13 for being violent towards police so far in 2019

Up until September of this year 88 people were imprisoned for theft, Minister for Home Affairs and National Security Michael Farrugia said in Parliament.

Farrugia was answering a parliamentary question posed by NP MP Hermann Schiavone regarding the number of people imprisioned in the past three years for domestic violence, theft, drugs, possession of weapons and violence towards the police.

In 2017, 136 people were imprisoned due to theft, which increased to 143 people imprisoned for theft in 2018. Between January and September 2019, 88 people were imprisoned for theft, the information shows.

As forpossession of weapons, 0 were imprisoned in 2017, whilst in the following year four people were imprisoned for possession of weapons, and in 2019 two have been imprisoned.

Concerning drugs, 92 people were imprisoned for drugs in 2017, and that figure dropped to 70 in 2018 and so far in 2019, 46 people have been imprisoned for drugs. In 2017, 13 people were imprisoned for domestic violence, 12 in 2018, and in 2019 five have been imprisoned for domestic violence.

This year so far, 13 people have been imprisoned for being violent towards police, 17 people were imprisoned in 2018 and 16 in 2017.
