Health Minister Chris Fearne visited an operating theatre where robots are to start assisting during surgery, the ministry announced.

Some €4 million are being invested for operations such as for prostate cancer are carried out in Malta. Until now, such operations were not possible locally.

Fearne said that about 35 patients used to be sent abroad for prostate cancer operations. As from next year, these will be held in Malta. Other operations in the liver, gynaecology and ENT can also be held locally via the use of robots.

Patients will be spending less time in hospital after such operations and will be able to recover more quickly, Fearne said.

Robots will also be employed in the distribution of medicine.
