Wednesday, 13 November 2019, 17:45 Last update: about 5 years ago

There have been 1,002 cases of domestic violence registered with the police in 2019, until the 30 September, according to Home Affairs Minister, Michael Farrugia.

He was replying to a parliamentary question made by Government Whip, Byron Camilleri. It also transpired that of the persons that allegedly carried out these offences, 243 were women and 901 were men.

The Minister said that in the cases that resulted in breach of the law, the persons responsible were also investigated and taken to court. An electronic system, however, is not kept with the details of these offences. For this reason, the exact figures of the how many people were taken to court could not be provided.

One man taken to court for loitering offence

Only one man was taken to court in 2019, until 30 September, on charges related to loitering, Farrugia also said, replying to other questions made by Camilleri.

On the other hand, five women were taken to court on the same charges.

In the same time period, 21 persons were taken to court on charges of rape, whilst 17 persons appeared in front of the court accused of hold-ups.
