The ‘Islands Transition Handbook’ has just been published by the Clean Energy for EU Islands Secretariat, an initiative that developed following preparatory action proposed by MEP Dr Alfred Sant with MEP Tonino Picula for the 2017 EU budget.
The project has been running for two years and was proposed to create an EU-islands structure to serve as a platform for knowledge sharing and direct assistance to islands on energy and climate action related issues.
The original funding allocation of two 2 million euro aimed at creating a structure that serves as the bedrock of a system through which islands will become frontrunners of self-sustaining clean energy. The European Commission has since expanded the funding dedicated to the sector.
Currently the secretariat is set to provide the authorities of islands, especially local authorities, with guidance on policy, access to funding and knowledge sharing.
The Islands Transition Handbook is an action-oriented guide to start and help navigate the transition towards clean energy for islands in the EU. The handbook instructs on how to develop a Clean Energy Transition Agenda and provides inspiration for the next steps as well as a checklist for clean energy transition management.
