Opposition expects inquiry report to be published in full – Adrian Delia

The Opposition expects the public inquiry report to be published in full, Opposition Leader Adrian Delia said yesterday.

Reacting to the news that the inquiry board has been recomposed, and that the terms of reference have been fine tuned, Delia said it took the government two years to do things right.

“The PN notes that the government has ignored its duties with regard to the fundamental rights of the Caruana Galizia family and the public interest for the past two years,” Delia said. “Two years had to pass for the government to do its duty and, in those two years, it failed to protect the public interest and made the country go through harsh criticism and scrutiny.”

In all of this, Delia said, the Prime Minister also kept his chief of staff, Keith Schembri, by his side, and continued as if nothing had happened, even when Schembri “refused to testify in order not to incriminate himself.”

Schembri recently dropped a libel suit he had instituted against former PN leader Simon Busuttil, saying he was already replying to all questions put to him on the subject of 17 Black in an ongoing magisterial inquiry.

Busuttil had accused Schembri of receiving bribes through the company, named in leaked e-mails as one of two companies that would pay $2 million to Schembri’s and Konrad Mizzi’s Panama companies.

Delia said that, while the PN hoped that the inquiry would not be obstructed, and while the party feels that the inquiry report should be published in full, it is now more important than ever that the Opposition strengthens its criticism of corruption. The party will be joining Saturday’s protest against corruption in Valletta, he said.
