Alfred Sant says all religions must be recognised in new Constitution

Former Prime Minister Alfred Sant is saying that all religions should be recognised in the new Constitution.

Writing on Facebook, Sant said that there are ambiguous pointers as to how the Catholic religion is to be included in the new Constitution that is being drafted.

Once we are in Europe, the rule should be that Malta is a lay country where all religions practised by Maltese citizens are given equal civil recognition.

Laws should be neutral in respect to religions, with none of them being privileged over another. Rules and regulations should be fair on everyone, he wrote.

If there are thoughts of changing the constitutional rules in this respect, we should respect this view, Sant concluded.

The Constitution of Malta, in its second article, says that 1) the religion of Malta is the Roman Catholic Apostolic Religion. (2) The authorities of the Roman Catholic Apostolic Church have the duty and the right to teach which principles are right and which are wrong. (3) Religious teaching of the Roman Catholic Apostolic Faith shall be provided in all State schools as part of compulsory education.
