Chris Cardona reinstated as minister, PL deputy leader

Sunday, 1 December 2019, 13:57 Last update: about 5 years ago

Chris Cardona has been reinstated as Economy Minister and Labour Party deputy leader, a Labour Party statement said.

In a meeting that was held today, the parliamentary group gave unanimous support to the Prime Minister for “all decisions he will take” after a “free discussion” in which all MPs participated, the statement said.

At the start of the meeting, Prime Minister Muscat said that Cardona returned to his roles.

On Tuesday, Cardona announced that he was suspended himself from ministerial duties.  The decision was announced after a cabinet meeting held at the Office of the Prime Minister. Cardona was recently questioned by the police in connection with the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. A senior member of his staff was also reportedly questioned. Cardona remains an MP.

The parliamentary group agreed that Parliament will discuss the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder after Yorgen Fenech was arraigned in court on Saturday.

The group also thanked Helena Dalli whose tenure in the group is over after she was appointed as a European Commissioner.

A separate statement issued by the Economy Ministry said Chris Cardona will resume his position as minister with immediate effect, following recent developments in the investigation.

This decision was taken after a discussion with the Prime Minister.

On Saturday, Cardona had asked for protection from the Speaker of the House of Representatives after fears that there had been an attempt to pin the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia on him.

In a letter sent to Speaker Anglu Farrugia, Cardona asked that “all necessary steps” be taken to protect him and his constitutional function as an MP.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives has told MP Chis Cardona that House rules do not provide for a remedy on matters that do not happen inside the chamber.
