Jean Claude Micallef has been elected as an MP.

The counting process for the casual election required for the seat in parliament recently vacated by Helena Dalli on the third district was conducted today.

Four candidates were in the running for the seat; PBS presenter Jean Claude Micallef, Marsascala mayor Mario Calleja, architect Edric Micallef, and Sebastian Muscat - with the former two starting off as the favourites for the seat.

Dalli vacated her seat after being appointed European Commissioner for Equality.  She officially took on her role on 1 December.

Micallef started with the most votes in hand - 266, with Mario Calleja following with 97 votes, Edric Micallef with 37, and Sebastian Muscat with 4.

The votes are the amounts that Dalli inherited from each candidate when they were eliminated.
