Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne and PL MP Robert Abela have both filed their nominations for the leadership of the Labour Party, with the winner eventually going on to become Prime Minister.
The Labour Party said in a statement that since there were only two candidates, there will be just one election, to be held during a PL congress on 11 January.
Fearne, in a video, said that he wished the moment this step was being done wasn't one so difficult or delicate for the party and country, "but moments like this require courage and determination."
He said that storms never scared him and will not scare him now. He spoke about his work in the party over the years.
He said that the moment we find ourselves in today require a steady hand, a big heart and a will of steel.
Fearne said that if he is entrusted with the leadership, he will give his give his strength and life for the party and country. "Be assured that the decisions that need to be taken, will be."
He spoke about having the chance to keep the party winning elections for many years to come, and spoke about helping those in need, and again putting Malta's name on the pedestal it deserves.
Today is the last day in which nominations for the PL leadership post could be filed.
