Barely 12 hours after the Prime Minister’s wife attacked the media for “spinning” stories regarding her husband, former Labour leader Alfred Sant defended the media’s right to report and said he understood why so much attention was focused on Malta.
“Are foreign media against Labour?” he asked on Facebook.
“It is true that in the past weeks all the stories about Malta have been negative. But by this we cannot conclude that they are taking part in a systematic attack against the country”.
First of all, he adds, “every journalist focuses on stories that are unusual. And we cannot deny that we had unusual developments in the country.”
Secondly, it is understandable that the killing of a journalist is of interest to other journalists. Sant pointed out however that foreign media were also close to Maltese people who had an interest to put the country in bad light.
On Friday, Michelle Muscat said that the "media was always against us".
