A Romanian man was arrested at the Malta International Airport on Monday evening in connection with a robbery that took place in St Julian’s on 22 December.

The man, aged 30, was about to board a flight to Romania.

On Sunday, the police had been informed that a robbery had taken place in a St Julian’s establishment. Cash and cheques were stolen for a shop in Gorg Borg Olivier Street.

The robbery is believed to have been committed by the Romanian man, who was employed at the shop. The police were later informed that the man was expected to leave Malta on a flight to Romania on Monday.

An arrest warrant was issued by Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit and the man was arrested at the airport.

The man was also found to be carrying cocaine and ecstasy. He was placed under arrest and was later charged in court.

He pleaded guilty and was given an 18-month prison term suspended for four years. He was fined €700 and has to pay €325.30 to the shop owner.
