The cause of the electricity supply interruption today was a fault in the Delimara gas plant, Enemalta has said.
"At 12:11, a fault occurred in the gas plant at Delimara Power Station, which led to interruptions to the gas supply and as a result the automated protection system was triggered. This led to interruptions to the electricity supply in several areas around the country, Enemalta said.
"At that time this resulted in a loss of 157MW of the capacity that was being generated by gas fired plants. Due to the available emergency supply, via spinning reserve, 79MW of the total load were in fact disconnected, equivalent to 20% of the demand. Within 15 minutes, at 12:26, electricity supply was restored in the affected zones of Hal Far and Bugibba, while all affected locations had their supply restored to normal until 1.04pm."
Malta experienced another widespread power cut earlier today.
Places like Naxxar, Zejtun, Hamrun, Attard, Birzebbuga, Swieqi, Pembroke, Zabbar, Madliena, Gozo, Zebbug and San Gwann were without electricity.
Residents in localities like St Julian's, Siggiewi, Mosta, Sliema, Tarxien, Fgura, Marsascala, Cottonera and Paola had also reported a power cut.
In some areas, electricity was restored within 30 minutes.
Enemalta had previously said that with the damage caused to the interconnector between Malta and Sicily, it was likely that power cuts would be frequent.
Since the incident took place on 23 December - which led to a nationwide power cut - Malta has been experiencing regular power cuts.
In an earlier statement on its Facebook page, Enemalta plc said "certain difficulties were encountered within the electricity supply system. This resulted in shedding which led to disruptions in the electricity supply in some areas around the country. While our technical personnel is addressing this matter to restore the electricity supply in the shortest possible time, we will be updating this page with the latest developments."
