From Prime Minister to football administrator – it took Joseph Muscat just a few days to plan his next project.
Muscat, who resigned last Monday in the wake of his office’s link to the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, is in talks with the Malta Football Association regarding the MFA’s project to have a Maltese team participate in the Italian third division, the Serie C.
The Malta Independent is informed that a four-hour meeting was held at the MFA headquarters at Ta’ Qali last Wednesday.
In his farewell speech on Friday, Muscat said he wants to involve himself in sports and this seems to be the first idea.
No official details were made available by the MFA or Muscat, but the MFA has for long felt the need to improve the level of Maltese football and having a team – not the national team – playing in the third tier in Italy will help.
The plan is to have the system up and running in time for the Maltese team to be able to compete as from the next football season, which starts in August/September. It is also an MFA plan to have an Under 19 selection taking part in the Italian league for players in that category.
